The Medela Classic Breast Pump is the real heavyweight hospital-grade pump that was commonly found in hospitals, where the pump had a permanent location. Medela is no longer manufacturing new Classic Breastpumps, and it has been mostly replaced by the newer Symphony Pump. The Classic is an excellent pump, but not the kind of breast pump that you could easily carry around to different locations. The Classic breast pump is a motorized unit that supplies the power to pump breastmilk. Breastmilk does not go through the machine, but only travels through your personal accessory set of breastshields, tubes, and bottles that attach to the pump. You can identify those on the picture as the yellow, white and clear pieces attached to the front of the pump. This ensures that there is absolutely no risk of your breastmilk being contaminated by another mother's milk. The yellow, white and clear accessories (bottles, tubes, breastshields, and filter) are purchased separately as individual parts, or in a "kit". If you already own a Medela Pump In Style Breastpump, or other Medela pump accessories, you may not need to purchase a complete kit, as some parts of your pump supplies can be used on the Classic. The Universal Pumping System and the Lactina Double Pumping System and identical, except that the Universal Pumping System contains a Classic barrier filter, and the Lactina Double Pumping System does not contain the filter.
